How to change Word 'undo' behavior to not be character-by-character?

If I type something in Microsoft Word 2016, then press Undo (ctrl+z), it 'undo's what I typed, one character at a time. This is not normal, and is quite frustrating. Normal behaviour is to undo the last word or sentence. So if I want to undo a whole paragraph, I either have to press and hold Undo and risk going too far, or press Undo a million times. Searching the Web, I came across two potential solutions: disable Overtype mode (it's in Insert mode already), or turn off page numbers (doesn't work). Apart from reinstalling Office, what do I have to do to get the normal Undo behaviour back?

Apparently, this has been an issue going back at least to Word 2007. Some people have found that having Overtype Mode enabled causes the problem. You can check Options > Advanced > Editing Options.

1. For Windows Desktop: This issue was fixed in Version 1703 (Build 7967.2139) for subscribers or in build 16.0.7967.2139 for non-subscribers. You may not have been prompted for this latest update as this update is gradually rolling out to our subscribers. To get the update immediately, open any Office 2016 app and choose File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
2. For Windows Mobile: This issue is fixed in version 17.7967.
