In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus is known as a very gentle and moral character. However, what readers are surprised to learn is that he is a very good shot. The rabid dog was a possible threat to his family, and therefore, he felt it was important to make the situation safe. He does not like to boast about his shooting ability because he does not agree with killing or harming things unless absolutely necessary. This event also helps Scout and Jem realize that there is a lot more to their father than they think!
