Jerry's basketball team

Jerry's basketball team makes 40 baskets for a total of 92 points in a basketball game. Some of the baskets are worth 2 points, and some are worth 3 points.

How many 3-pointers did Jerry's team make?

x = the number of 2 pointers, y = number of three pointers

 

x + y = 40

2x + 3y = 92

 

y = 40 - x, sub that in wherever you see y, so...

 

2x + 3(40 - x) = 92

2x + 120 - 3x = 92

120 - x = 92

28 - x = 0

x = 28 two-pointers for 56 points, so therefore...

y = 12 3-pointers for 36 points

 

28 + 12 = 40 shots, 56 + 36 = 92 points
