The first thing I tell my students is that they need to know exactly what rolling your R's in your throat feels like. I suggest that they take a small amount of water into their mouths, tilt their heads back and gargle with the water as if they were gargling with mouthwash. This is as close as I can describe what rolling your R's in French feels like.
I then tell them to make a list of about fifty French words containing the letter R, hold the list over their heads, tilt their heads back, and "gargle" the words as they read them off the list as though they were gargling them with water. My students have repeatedly told me that this method works extremely well.
