I realize your question about saving an equation in Word is years old, but since I see that it was never answered here, I thought I'd give it a go.
I would use a screenshot or snipping tool to save as an image.
Example:
I have the equation in my Word document.
Open up a blank PowerPoint and choose a blank layout.
Click to Insert > Screenshot > Screen Clipping
The screen will toggle over to Word (if you only have those two windows open).
Wait until the screen looks white-washed, then select your equation.
It will pop the image over to PowerPoint where you can right-click on it and select "Save as Picture..."
