The word "right" has the meaning of "being in the right". I know for sure that Near Eastern societies spoke of someone siting on "my righ side" as "sitting in a place of strength". "He is my right hand" as being "my representative".
I know the issue goes beyond our modern time. However, the House of Commons in England has given us also this idea of "right" and "left" because opposing parties sit on the right and the left in front of each other, hence the idea of "leftist" in English.
I would love to know what others think as well.
I hope this helps!
