The number in front of x tells something about how the line goes.
If the number is positive the line moves up from left to right.
If the number is negative the line moves down from left to right.
f(x) = x, goes up from left to right.
f(x) = -x/2, goes down left to right.
The size of the number tells how fast the line goes up or down.
This is designated by a fraction. The top number says how many units the line moves in the up/down. The bottom number tells how many units the line moves to the right.
g(x) = -1/2 x. Every time the line moves down one (the number is minus) the line moves right two.
For f(x) = x the number in front of x is 1, or 1/1. Every time the line moves up one (the number is positive) the line moves to the right one?
OK?
