In the function y = (x - h)2 + k, (h, k) is the vertex. To move the graph vertically (up or down) add (up) or subtract from "k."
y = (x + 4)2 + 5 translates the graph up 6 (5 - (-1) = 6).
Notice the minus sign in front of the "k." Rewriting the equation in that form
y = (x - (-4))2 - 1. To move the graph horizontally (left or right) add (go right) or subtract (go left) from "k." To go right 2, -4 + 2 = -2. h is -2
y = (x - (-2))2 -1, or y = (x + 2)2 - 1. These two can be combined to move the graph diagonally, e.g., up and to the left.
