Hello! As far as I know, these two words have the same meaning when translated into English but 동일하다 comes from Chinese characters(同一하다) and 똑같다 is pure Korean. You are correct in stating that 동일하다 is generally used in more formal situations/contexts and 똑같다 is used in more casual, everyday situations; therefore, you will hear 똑같다 more often in conversations and see 동일하다 being used more often in formal written texts.
