This question may seem confusing because there are parentheses involved. Because you are not multiplying, dividing, or subtracting the two sets of parentheses, just get rid of them!
By eliminating parentheses, we get: -9x2 + 6x + 2 + 4x2 - x - 1.
Now, group like terms together: -9x2 + 4x2 + 6x - x + 2 - 1.
Simplify, and you are left with: -5x2 + 5x + 1

you need to simplify the expression by collecting like terms:
(-9 + 4)x² + (6 + -1)x + (2 + -1) = -5x² + 5x + 1

This appears to be a simplification problem. Following the order of operations, we evaluate anything inside parentheses first; however, there's nothing to evaluate an no like terms to combine. Hence we can drop the parentheses and combine any like terms, starting from highest to lowest order terms.
To help visualize, we could group terms in this way (though it's not necessary):
(-9x² + 4x²) + (6x - x) + (2 - 1)
-5x² + 5x + 1
