Microsoft Office - Excel, Word, & PowerPoint - CERTIFIED TEFL/TESOL
That menu item really is misleading — “Restrict Formatting and Editing” sounds like you're about to add restrictions, not access the settings to remove them. Your follow-up insight is spot-on: it’s actually the gateway to unlocking the document, which is the opposite of what the label suggests. Thanks for highlighting that! It’s a common source of confusion and will definitely help others who feel stuck in “read-only” limbo.
🛠 How to Remove Editing Restrictions in Word 2007
- Open the document in Word 2007.
- Go to the Review tab on the ribbon.
- Click Protect Document (far right).
- Select Restrict Formatting and Editing.
- A sidebar will appear on the right. Look for the message:
“This document is protected from unintentional editing. You may only fill in forms in this region.”
- At the bottom of the sidebar, click Stop Protection.
- If prompted, enter the password (if one was set). If no password is required, the document will become editable immediately.
