The perimeter and area of a rectangle are 48 cm and 140 cm2 respectively. Find the length and width of the rectangle.

Suppose the length and width of the rectangle are x and y,

 

xy=140 (1)

2x+2y=48 (2)

from (2), x+y=24, so y=24-x

take to (1), x(24-x)=140, so 24x-x^2=140, x^2-24x+140=0, x=14 or 10, thus the 2 side length are 14 and 10

because x is length, y is width, length=14 cm, width= 10 cm
