Difference between "нет" and "не"?

What is the difference between «нет» and «не»? They both seem to mean "no". When should each one be used? Are they interchangeable?

Yelena F.

"Не" is a negative particle, as well as "Нет". However, the latter has more functions: it creates a negative answer to the question: "Это яблоки?" - Нет. Это не яблоки, это нектарины". It can be a predicate in a sentence expressing "absence": "В офисе сегодня никого нет". The word (a particle) "не" does not have an independent meaning by itself without a word it is attached to creating negation/contrast ideas. For example, "Сегодня не дождь, а снег"; "Он не пришёл в офис"; "Это не его сестра".
