Was the novel "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov written in Russian?

 

This novel caused quite a stir when it was made into a movie in the early 1960s... I don't think the book was very popular prior to the movie coming out in the States.

Initially, "Lolita" was published in France in 1955 (in the English language), then in 1958 in NYC - in Russian. "Lolita" was published in the USSR in Russian only in 1989.

Lolita was originally written in English. It was first published in Europe in 1955, then in America in 1958. The author translated it to Russian, his native language, in 1967.

Yes "Lolita" by V. Nabokov was originally written in English and then translated into Russian. However, all new editions in Russia still are published censored just like in 1989.

Later it was translated into Russian by Nabokov himself and published in New York City in 1967 by Phaedra Publishers. Lolita quickly attained a classic status
