A collection of nickels and quarters is worth $3.90.  There are 54 coins in all.  How many of each coin are there?

let n= number of nickels

q= number of quarters

 

You know that n + q = 54

25*q + 5*n= 390

 

now solve the 2 equations.

 

you should get 6 quarters and 48 nickels.
