The answer is A. "While the pasta cooks," is a dependent clause. It is not a complete sentence until you answer what is happening while the pasta is cooking. "The boys played together," is an independent clause and could stand alone as a simple sentence. "While the pasta cooks, the boys played together." would be a complex sentence. Add the conjunction, and, plus the independent clause, "their Grandmother relaxed,"; you now have two independent clauses and a dependent clause which make the sentence a compound-complex sentence.
