30 + 14 = 44, so there will be 44 total pens.

Dan will have three times as many as Tony.  Let n be how many Tony has, and then 3n will be how many Dan has:

3n + n = 44   (because the total number of pens has not changed)

4n = 44
n = 11

So, Tony will have 11.  Tony has 14.  14 - 11 is the number Tony gives Dan, and that is 3.  When Tony gives Dan 3 pens, Dan will have three times as many as Tony has.
