my daughter have a math problems she not quite understand.  Please explain to me.  Thank you.

 

Question:

A store sells bags of 9 apples.  Mr. Hyon buys 5 bags of apples to make pies.  Which way can Mr. Hyon use to show how many apples he buys?

 

a.  (4x9) + (5x9)

b.  (3x5) + (6x5)

c.  (4x5) + (5x9)

d.  (3x5) + (9x5)

The question is asking you to factorize 5x9

 

It cannot be any answer that contains 5x9 + something else, or the answer will add up to more than 5x9.

So that excludes a,c and d.  So the answer is b.

 

Calculate it: and you see that 3x5 (=15) + 6x5 (=30) is equal to 5x9 (=45)
