I would welcome a learned discussion of this point, but I would expect it would be tied to the fact that the column vectors resemble line segments in m dimensions (and since they include all scalar multiples of those vectors, you have lines). Similarly, the row vectors represent equations of lines in n dimensions.
What does 'linear' mean in Linear Algebra?
Why Linear Algebra named in that way?
Especially, why we call it `linear`? What does it mean?
