In the United States, our government operates on a system of "checks and balances" that were designed to separate power and ensure that no one branch becomes too powerful. The three branches of our government are the executive, judicial, and legislative. One way that the legislative branch can "check" the power of the judicial branch is by appointing or rejecting justice nominations. For example, a congress member can vote "NO" if they do not agree with a judicial candidate being appointed to the Supreme Court.
