2 funds and interest and amount invested

Mr. Daniels invested a sum of money in 2 funds. The first fund yielded 6% interest and the other fund yielded 4%. In all, he invested $4,000. If his total annual income from his investments was $188, find the amount he invested in each fund.

x = amt in fund 1

y = amt in fund 2

 

x + y = 4000

.06x+.04y=188

 

multiple first equation by 6

multiple second equation by 100

 

6x+6y=24000

6x+4y=18800

 

now subtract 2 from 1

 

2y=5200

 

y =2600

 

x = 4000 -2600

 

x =1400
