Question

A gas station sells regular gas for $2.15 per gallon and premium gas for $2.90 a gallon. At the end of a business day 250 gallons of gas were sold, and receipts totaled $575. How many gallons of each type of gas were sold?

Let x = the number of gallons or regular gas sold.  Since 250 gallons were sold in total, the number of premium gallons sold is 250-x.

 

$575 = ($2.15)*x + ($2.90)(250-x)

 

575 = 2.15x + 725 - 2.9x

 

Solve for x.
