Solve word problem

Distance= rate•time formula


A rowing team rowing with the current traveled 18mi in 2hr. Against the current, the team rowed a distance of 8mi in the same amount of time. Find the rate of the rowing team in calm water and rate of the current.

My setup: (R+C)•2=18 divided by 2= R+C=9 (R-C)•2=8 divided by 2= R-C=4 I crossed out the C’s and ended up with: 2R=13 I divided 13 by 2 R= 2.5 Did I solve it correctly?

2R=13 means R=6.5 & C=2.5. If that is what you did, it is correct. Just to be pedantic: you didn’t cross out the C’s; you added and C-C = 0. I hope that helps.
