You need two equations.
w + d = 750 (cost of washer plus cost of dryer is $750)
w = 2d (washer costs two times the cost of the dryer)
Since you cannot solve an equation with two variables (letters), use the second equation to replace the "w" in the first equation with "2d".
2d + d = 750
3d = 750
Divide both sides by 3: d = 250
Now that you know the dryer costs $250, plug that number into the first equation: w + 250 = 750.
Subtract 250 from both sides: w = 500. The washer costs $500.
