x+y=3000

x=(2/3)y

Substitute

(2/3)y+y=3000

Clear fractions (multiply by 3)

2y + 3y = 9000

Collect terms

5y = 9000

Divide

y=1800

x=(2/3)y = (2/3)1800 = 1200
