The reason is that, when operated as an amplifier -saturation region-, it is the FET's gate-to-source voltage the electrical variable that controls the output current. The BJT, on the contrary, is a current-controlled device because, when operated as an amplifier -active region-, the electrical variable that controls the output current is the base current.
