My response would be to Ms. Quindlen,
1) By what do you mean "America?" Three Americas exist: North, Central, and South.
2) To what are you referring in "America?" Geology, geography, nations, societies, cultures, economies?
3) "Improbable" means having limited chance of success (measured by successes divided by possibilities). How can an "idea" have a limited chance of success.
4) I cannot determine what you mean, Ms.Quindlin, since apparently you do not know what you mean.
