Many times when you have a multisyllabic word like those you supplied, the vowels will make a schwa or "lazy" sound. The English language does this to help us say these words faster. Therefore, in the case of these words, the letter "i" makes more of an "uh" sound." Sometimes there is also the "ih" sound made. Other, easier examples to explain this are the words: "Elephant" and "telephone" We know that the short, closed sound for "e" is "eh."
