First off that depends on your budget. I also agree a Fender pro jr. is a excellent amp, as I have had one. A Fender mustang is a good amp too. Just check on the price difference.

I teach beginning blues and rock guitar styles
My first cheap amp (that was any good) was a Fender Blues Junior. Still have it today. Enough volume to play in clubs and clear, unadorned tone. The reverb can be a little tinny. Highly recommended as a beginner's amp or a backup amp but, if you have particular notions about what sort of tone you want, you'll have to start spending more.

I am in the fender bandwagon. But, I have been also suggesting a blackstar fly 3!
The blackstar fly 3 is what I take to teach with at students houses and the batteries last for at least 2months with my constant use. Used indoors/outdoors whenever and wherever I feel like practicing.
It is super portable and has a headphone output for silent practice. There are better sounding amps but this one is around $60 when I got it and it gets played the most.
I experience hours of pure joy playing through my Marshall MG series 10CD,at 12 inches (11"x12"x7"deep) the amp gives Clean distortion, and KICK's serious ....... treat yourself! Invest the money. and in the future if you decide to sell you will have no problem unloading it. I hope that I was able to help you with your decision Need a Blues Buddy/ Guitar Tutor let me know.
I practice on a Fender Champion 101 which I paid not much over $100 for. I has good distortion. You can pay a lot of money for an amp, and a lot of that money goes to good distortion. For the money, this amp does the job. It is good enough. And loud enough. Plenty loud. If you are just starting out, this is a good way to go. Don't pay a lot of money for an amp...yet. Wait. Get good with the Fender.

Fender makes really good amps in all price ranges. Can't go wrong with a Fender.
