Mrs. Kash put her turkey in the oven at 9:26am. She set the timer for 4 hours and 15 minutes. What time was the turkey ready?

Hi Diamond, the turkey was ready at 1:41 pm. There are several ways to solve this problem. One way is to convert the hours and minutes into minutes. Then add the start time to the cook time. Finally, convert the minutes back to hours.

Example:

9:26am is 566 minutes

4 hours and 15 minutes is 255 minutes

Add 566 to 255 giving 821 minutes

Converting back to hours and minutes 13 hours and 41 minutes. 13 hours is 1 pm. Answer 1:41 pm.

A second way to work the problem is to just add the two numbers, keeping in mind there are 60 minutes in an hour. If the number of minutes is greater than 60, subtract 60 from the number of minutes and 1 to the number of hours. If the number of hours is greater than 12, subtract 12 from the number of hours to get the actual time.

Example:

9:26

4:15

13:41

Number of hours is greater than 12, therefore subtract 12 from 13 to get the actual hour of the day, or 1 pm.
