The best way to do this problem is to start with your conversion factors such as :
1 foot = 12 inches
3 feet = 1 yard
I always show my work when doing conversions so we'll start with feet to inches
4 feet x (12 inches/1 foot) = 48 inches
The easiest way would be to just multiply - but by making a fraction out of the conversion factor, you can start to use this method for each conversion you will need to do. If you start with feet, then place feet at the bottom of the fraction so that the unit will cancel.
4 feet x (1 yard/ 3 feet) = (4 x 1) / 3 = 1.3 yards
Since we started with feet, I placed 3 feet at the bottom of the fraction and 1 yard at the top.
