How do expressions such as “no cake walk” and “not for the faint-hearted” add meaning to the passage

From my experience as a writer and reader - it evokes memories of when you have heard those phrases. It is supposed to connect the reader to the moment by a) being lighthearted and b) something the reader has heard before.
