If they meet in hours, what is the rate of each bus?

Two buses leave town 420 mi apart at the same time and travel toward each other. One bus travels 20 mi per hour
faster than the other. If they meet in 3 hours, what is the rate of each bus?

Say, the speed of first bus= x m/ hr

       the speed of second bus=(x+20) m/ hr

 

They meet in 3 hours

 

(x+20)*3+3x=420

6x+60=420

6x=360

x=60

Speed of first bus=60m / hr

Speed of second bus= 80 m / hr

so, speed of other bus is x + 20

 

3(x + (x + 20)) = 420

 

3(2x + 20) = 420

 

6x + 60 = 420

 

6x = 420 - 60

 

6x = 360

 

x = 60 mph
