It depends on the type of derivative. You can have a scalar derivative of a scalar function, a vector derivative of a scalar function (such as the gradient of a multi-variable scalar function, which gives a vector), a scalar derivative of a vector function (such as the divergence of a vector, which gives a scalar), and a vector derivative of a vector function (such as the curl of a vector, which gives another vector).
