Hi, Donna. 

I'm not positive if this is what you're looking for, but Joe could fold the 5 inch side in half (causing a length of 2 1/2 inches) and then fold the 3 inch side in half (causing a length of 1 1/2 inches). 

2 1/2 plus 1 1/2 equals four inches.
