We an use kinematics in one dimension to solve for the distance the book falls, which would be the height.
d = ?
t = 1.5 seconds
a = 9.8 m/s2 (acceleration of gravity)
d = vit + 1/2 a t2
Since he dropped the book, vi = 0
So d = 0 + 1/2 (9.8) (1.5)2
Now solve for d and this will give you the distance it fell (or the height of the balcony)
