To ducktail off of Rebecca's answer, the absolute value of a number is how far a number is away from 0 on a number line:
|----------------------------------------------------------------------|
-40 -32 -20 -10 0 10 20 30
Negative thirty-two is thirty-two units away from 0, therefore the absolute value of -32 is 32.
