2x - 14 + 3x = 28
Add like terms (2x + 3x):
3x - 14 = 28
Now we use the "addition property of equality" by adding 14 to both sides of the equation. The addition property of equality says that if a-c = c. then a-b+b = c+b, or a = c+b:
3x - 14 + 14 = 28 + 14
3x = 42
Now we use the "division property of equality" by dividing both sides of the equation by 3. The division property of equality says that if a*b = c, then (a*b)/b = c/b, or a = b/c:
3x/3 = 42/3
x = 14
