Following the the advice that John gave is how you solve the problem.  However every thing else you need to know is the stated equation Y= 3X-2. The slope of the line is 3 and the Y intercept is -2. So drawing that line shows that that -Y does indeed equal a + X at X=1/2 and Y being -1/2

Hi Silly, What you have is two simultaneous equations. Simply substitute the y from the second equation (-x) into the first equation: -x = 3x -2. Then simplify. To get the value for y simply use one of the equations using the value you just obtained for x and solve.
