Draw a horizontal line. Place 0 in the middle. Make equidistant marks on either side of the zero. Label them, to the right of zero, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc, and to the left of the zero, -1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -6.
Now you have a number line that is labeled and can be used to compare and order numbers. Pick, say, 5 and -1 on your number line. Which one is a bigger number? The one that is the furthest to the right: 5.
