If Jonathan's parents told him for every 5 hours of homework or reading he completes, he will be able to play 3 hours of video games. His friend Lucas's parents told their son that he can play 30 minutes for every hour of homework or reading he completes. If both boys spend the same amount of time on homework and reading this week, which boy gets more time playing video games?

to calculate the time to they get to play, let us first make sure the hours spent in studying is same for both of them

 

Jonathan studies for 5 hours and get to play 3 hrs.

Lucas studies for 1 hour and gets to play for 30 min =0.5 hrs 

so if Lucas alsi studies for 5 hours he gets to play 0.5 * 5 = 2.5 hours which is lesser than Jonathan.

 

So Janathan gets to play more.

The problem states that both boys read or did homework for exactly the same number of hours.. Let me pick an easy number of hours.  Let's us say that each read or did hw for 10 hours.

 

1).  Every five hours he reads or does hw, Jonathan can play games for three hours.  Since we are assuming that he read /hw for ten hours, that means that he played 6 hours.

 

2) Lucas the rules is for every hour of reading or homework, he can played games for 30 minutes or half an hour.  Since we are assuming that he read/Hw for ten hours, that means that he can play games for five hours.  

 

So, Jonathan will be able to play more than Lucas.  This will always be the case regardless of the number of hours of you pick.
