This depends on the student program and the college. A student can just take a few IB courses and take IB exams for those courses. Some colleges give credit or advanced placement for high IB scores (such as a 6 or 7, the highest). If a student follows the rigorous IB program, the student gets an IB diploma which is recognized by colleges as high achievement. However some high schools offer IB and some offer AP. For the college, it might look at both of these as evidence of high achievement, depending on the IB test scores. IB tends to require some advanced writing as well.
Most college scholarships are based on merit and need. You generally need to apply for scholarships. Sometimes a college will offer you a scholarship based on high PSAT, SAT or ACT scores. Others may offer significant amounts of money to those who also complete an IB program.
Look at your school offerings, then look at the schools you are interested in. Also, do some searches on IB diplomas and colleges. If you can handle the IB program, it is an excellent way to get ready for advanced university studies. However be prepared to work very hard. In addition, do not forget to study for the PSAT and then the SAT or ACT for college entrance. Go for a high GPA. Be proactive and plan your studies and study time. Make sure you talk to the colleges about scholarships you can apply for, and apply for everything you can.
Good question! Good luck to you.
