Another example is Travis' work to keep Old Yeller indoors at night, after the family learns that the dog has been stealing food from local farms. In addition, the knowledge of the local hydrophobia (rabies) outbreak provides another reason for Travis to keep the dog inside at night. However this dog is used to roaming around, so Travis must persist in keeping Old Yeller in his bedroom at night for a while.
The end, when Travis must decide to shoot the dog when he knows he has rabies, is more an act of courage than persistence. Thus this book is also a "coming of age" novel, in that by the end Travis has grown up quite a bit, seen danger and faced it, protected his little brother, and dealt with the sadness of death.
