A rectangular pool is surrounded by a walk 3 meters wide. The pool is 5 meters longer than its width. If the total area of the pool and walk is 342 square meters more than the area of the pool, find the dimensions of the pool.

length of pool = X+5

width of pool including walk ways (both sides) = X+3+3 =X+6

length of pool including walk ways (both sides)= (X+5)+3+3 =X+11

 

total area is 342 greater than area of pool -> (X+6)(X+11)-X(X+5)=342

                                                                  X^2+17X+66-X^2-5X=342

                                                                  X=23

 

width of pool is 23 meters

length of pool is 28 meters
