Let T = total number of students, G = number of girls and B = number of boys
T = G+B
Since 35% are girls
.35T = G
or
T = 2.857G
Also since there are 300 fewer girls than boys
B - 300 = G
or
B = G + 300
Now we can substitute into the original equation
T = B + G
becomes
2.875G = (G+300) + G
2.875G = 2G + 300
Now you can solve for G and find T from there
