2 seconds is the time for the pebble to go down + the time for the sound to go up. We can write this as
2 = tp + ts
The distance that they both travel are equal, distance sound = distance pebble
ds = dp
Since distance = rate * time, we can write ds as 340ts
For dp we can use our equation in one dimension and write dp = v0tp - 1/2 agt2 , or dp = -1.5tp-4.9tp2
So now our equation ds = dp can be written as
340ts = -1.5tp - 4.9tp2
From our first equation, 2 = tp + ts. We can substitute ts = tp - 2 into the above equation and we get
340(tp-2) = -1.5tp - 4.9tp2
Now you can find out what tp equals and then find the depth of the well from that.
