asked 05/30/18Inequality of lions in its habitat
how do I write an inequality for instance:
2 lions need at least 575 meters to live. Any addition lions need 175 meters. How many lions can live in a 1725 meter habitat?

Let a = the # of lions. Because the rest of the lions need the additional space...
a - 2 ≤ (1725 - 575)/175
a - 2 ≤ 1150/175
a ≤ 1150/175 + 2
a ≤ 8.57
So, 8 lions can live in the space.
6(175) + 575 = 1050 + 575 = 1625
1725 - 1625 = 100, so no more room for another lion.

Hi Michelle,
I am going to assume that you mean square meters, like an area.
2 lions occupy 575 m2.
So, you can populate an additional 1725 - 575 = 1150 m2.
If each additional lion requires 175 m2, then 175n <= 1150, where n is a positive integer representing additional lions.
Divide both sides by 175, and get n <= 6.57
Lions come in integers, so, n <= 6 additional lions.
