It means that western society probably is doomed because you cannot learn much if you are addicted to constantly checking in with social media. No concentration, no learning.
 
It means a society that cannot distinguish truth from rumor or oft-repeated lies. It means a society that has lost its values. It means that "1984" arrived, in the form of 2016.

There is also the matter of enabling academic dishonesty.  A student that I tutored a few years ago told me that students were texting to each other answers to a multiple choice test, and they were found out by the teacher.  So in addition to inattention and distraction caused by addiction to smartphones, there is a new way of cheating, which presents challenges of its own.
