Find distance of the cars and time

The newly revamped Physicsmobile is going 200.0 km/h when it blows by a beamer going 100.0 kmh. The beamer accelerates
immediately after being passed reaching 220.0 km/h in 10.0 s. It then maintains this velocity. The innocent Physicsmobile continues on at
200.0 km/h, unaware of the madman approaching from behind.
a) How far apart are the cars when the beamer reaches 220 km/h? 
b) How long does it take the beamer to catch the Malibu, from the moment the beamer is passed? 

Answer 1

a) v_p=200km/h=200(.278)=55.6m/s    (using km/h=.278m/s)

v_b=100km/h=100(.278)=27.8m/s 

Beamer accelerates to 220.0 km/h=61.2m/s in 10s  so

a_b=(61.2-27.8)/10=3.34m/s²

To get the distance traveled by both from the passing point:

x_p=55.6(10)=556m and x_b=.5(3.34)(10)²+27.8(10)=445m

So the Physicsmobile is still leading the Beamer by

Δx=556-445=111m
