A can of baked beans has a paper label wrapped around the outside. 

 

The can has a height of 11cm and a radius of 3.5cm. 

The label covers the entire height of the can. 

The label has a 1cm overlap vertically so that it can be stuck together.  

 

Calculate the area of the label.

Nah, this isn't so tough! You can wrestle it to the ground. Just remember that if you peel off the label ever so nearly, it will form a long rectangle. The height is 11cm, so you already have that one covered. How long is it, though? Well, Remember that the label wraps around the can once (I know, I know; we'll get to the overlap shortly). That make it the circumference, and what is the formula for that?

C = 2 * Π * r

  = 2 * 3.14 * 3.5

   =21.98

That is almost our length, but we were told to add 1cm, so now the length is:

L = 21.98 + 1 = 22.98

A = L * W

  = 22.98 * 11

  =252.78 cm²
